West Michigan Mid-Sixties Bands

Mafia

Grand Rapids

From Paul Herman (April 2002)

Do you know anything about a band called the Mafia that later became the Wheatstone Bridge? I saw them playing at The Place and also at Calvin College Field House sometime between 67 to 69. I think they were from the west side of Grand Rapids. They played lots of the blues. They dressed up like a bunch wise men and had coffins for speakers.

My ex brother-in-law Paul Shemanski was in that band. He's probably 56 now. Yes, they were west siders. I never heard them play!

Saw this band at Fountain Street Church back in 68. Was one of the first bands in G.R. that had a light show. They were ahead of the times. Also saw them at a VFW post across the street from the Amway in Downtown G.R.

I remember seeing them. I'm thinking that Bill Chrysler from Kenowa may have been the bass player.
